Last week, I had the opportunity to sit down with Kelly, a professional tarot reader and pet communicator who shared fascinating insights into her spiritual practice. Among the many topics we discussed, her relationship with deities—particularly Guan Yin—stood out as especially meaningful.
All You Need to Know About Deity Work
When I asked Kelly about achieving success in various aspects of life, her answer centered on connection.
"When it comes to achieving success—whether in love, career, or health—it ultimately depends on how deeply we connect with ourselves and with others," she explained. "Deity work may sound grandiose and lofty, but at its essence, it's simply about establishing a connection with a higher intelligence or power."
Kelly went on to explain that different philosophical traditions view this relationship differently. Some see deities as entirely separate beings, while others understand them as aspects of our own consciousness. What resonated with me most was her belief that "what matters most is recognizing that we all possess far greater potential within us than we typically imagine."
A Three-Generation Connection with Guan Yin
Kelly primarily works with Guan Yin, a deity she first encountered in 2017. What makes this relationship special is its multigenerational nature.
"Guan Yin reached out and said she wants that relationship," Kelly told me. "I work with a few deities, but Guan Yin is outstanding in the sense that she has been in my family for three generations. She used to work with my grandmother and also spoke to my mother."
I was struck by the personal nature of this connection and how it transcended time within her family.
Finding Your Own Path
Despite this deep family tradition, Kelly emphasized the importance of finding one's own way.
"The first time I spoke with Guan Yin, I had no idea what I had to do," she admitted with a laugh. "I follow certain traditions that resonate with me, but it helps to have your own beliefs and your own practices! That's where tuning into who you are and what you stand for becomes very, very important. Blindly following traditions will not result in meaningful relationships."
Navigating the New Age Landscape
Kelly expressed excitement about the accessibility of spiritual information today while offering words of caution.
"The new age movement is very exciting and empowering because there's so much information at our fingertips," she said. "But sometimes people accidentally seek out deities that aren't meant to be approached. My advice is to take your time and don't rush into anything. What is meant for you will not go past you."
Her final thought struck me as particularly insightful: "A lot of the time, what people are really seeking is identity and power, because many of them feel lost."

The Guardian Dog: A Powerful Story of Protection
Kelly shares a particularly moving case that demonstrates the depth of her pet communication abilities. A married couple with no children had been treating their dog as their son. The beloved pet had developed a mysterious growth and was suffering significantly. Despite numerous veterinary visits, the cause remained elusive, and the heartbroken couple was considering euthanasia as a final act of mercy.
"They called me as a last resort," Kelly explains. "When I connected with their dog, I discovered something remarkable. Their home was adjacent to a graveyard, and the dog had actually been serving as their spiritual protector. He had essentially been absorbing negative energies that otherwise would have affected the couple."
This revelation completely changed the couple's understanding of their pet's condition and the role he played in their lives.
Discovering Her Gift: A Childhood Encounter
Kelly's unique ability to communicate with animals revealed itself at a surprisingly young age. "I was in kindergarten," she recalls with a smile. "There was this dog that would roam around the school grounds, and all the kids were terrified of it."
Unlike her classmates, young Kelly approached the situation with remarkable confidence. "I was very brave and outspoken even then. I walked up to the dog and very firmly directed my thoughts toward it, focusing all my energy to my forehead—what I now know is the third eye. I essentially 'blasted' a message telling the dog to leave."
The result was immediate and astonishing. "The dog completely froze, then slowly turned and walked away," she says. This early experience planted the seeds for her current practice, though it would be years before she fully understood and developed her abilities.
Common Misconceptions in Pet Communication
As animal communication gains popularity, Kelly notes that misconceptions have proliferated as well. "One of the biggest misunderstandings I encounter is people attributing complex human characteristics to their animals," she explains.
"Many clients ask their pets for advice about human affairs—relationship problems, career decisions, financial matters. But animals simply don't process the world that way! They don't understand stock markets or office politics," Kelly laughs. "They can sense emotions and energies beautifully, but asking your cat whether you should accept that job offer is setting unrealistic expectations for both of you."
The Nature of Animal Communication
When I ask what it's actually like to converse with pets, Kelly offers a delightful comparison: "It's very much like talking to a very distracted toddler," she says. "They communicate in bursts of images, feelings, and simple concepts. Their attention can shift rapidly, and they're often more interested in immediate sensory experiences than abstract conversations."
Does Breed Matter in Communication?
I was curious whether certain animal breeds (specifically dog breeds), often ranked by intelligence, might be easier to communicate with than others. Kelly's response is refreshingly egalitarian.
"Actually, no!" she laughs. "Personality matters far more than breed. Just like humans, there are pets that are naturally chatty and others that are more reserved—and that's perfectly fine." She does admit to one interesting observation: "I do find huskies can be quite challenging to talk to, though. They have very... unique personalities."
The Case of the Reformed Troublemaker
Kelly shares another successful case involving a cat with serious behavioral issues. "This cat was essentially terrorizing the other cats in the household—fighting, hissing, creating absolute chaos. The owners were at their wits' end and considering rehoming him."
After being called in, Kelly had what she describes as "a very stern conversation" with the problematic feline. "I essentially laid out the consequences of his actions—that if he didn't improve his behavior, his family might have to give him up. I made sure he understood the gravity of the situation."
The results were remarkable. "The last I heard, immediately after our conversation, the cat completely changed his ways. He's now best friends with the other cats in the house now.”
Perhaps sometimes pets just need to understand the impact of their behavior, just like we do.
From Skeptic to Believer: My Personal Experience
Though I’m no stranger to tarot readings and all things spiritual, animal communication is something I was still skeptical about. I decided to put Kelly's abilities to the test. At the end of our interview, I surprised her with an impromptu request: could she do a quick session with my cat?
What happened next left me genuinely speechless. Kelly not only described my cat's personality with remarkable accuracy—something a skeptic might dismiss as an educated guess based on common feline traits—but she mentioned something that stopped me in my tracks.
"You scoop your cat up with both hands like a baby," she said casually, "and your cat absolutely loves it."
This definitely got my attention. This was something I had never posted on social media, never mentioned during our interview, and never shared with anyone. It was a private moment between me and my cat that happened in the privacy of my home.
There was simply no way for Kelly to have researched this beforehand, especially given the spontaneous nature of my request. I hadn't planned to ask for a reading when I arrived for the interview, so she couldn't have prepared this information in advance.
That single detail—so specific and so accurate—accomplished what hours of discussion about spiritual practices couldn't. It made me reconsider everything I thought I knew about animal communication and the boundaries of human-pet connections.
